September out West is a season all its own.
In Northern Nevada, cooler mornings start making their way back and weekends may mean squeezing in another trip to Tahoe before winter arrives. Farther south, summer temperatures can hang around a little longer. Across our communities, school is back in session, football season is getting underway and the holidays are suddenly closer than they seemed a few weeks ago.
Your calendar may be changing—and your spending probably is, too.
Before the final months of the year get busy, here are six smart ways to get your finances ready for what’s ahead.
1. Give Your Summer Spending a Reality Check
Road trips. Concerts. Vacations. Dining out. A few extra weekends away.
Summer spending can add up quickly, and September is a good time to see where everything landed.
Take a look at your checking and credit card activity from the past few months. If you spent more than planned, don't panic. Instead, identify where you can adjust over the next few months.
Maybe that means cutting back on dining out, canceling a subscription you aren't using or temporarily directing a little more toward a credit card balance.
The goal isn't to make up for an entire summer overnight. It's to know where you stand and make a plan.
2. Start Planning for Holiday Spending Before the Holidays
The holidays have a habit of sneaking up on us.
Between gifts, travel, parties, meals and everything else that comes with the season, waiting until November or December to think about the cost can put unnecessary pressure on your budget.
Start by setting a total holiday spending goal. Then divide that number by the paychecks you have remaining before the holidays.
Setting aside even a little at a time can make December feel much more manageable.
3. Prepare for Your Next Seasonal Expense
Living in the West means your seasonal expenses can look very different depending on where you call home.
For Northern Nevada households, fall may mean thinking about heating costs, winterizing your home or vehicle, snow tires and ski season. In Southern Nevada and Arizona, warmer weather can stick around, keeping cooling costs on the household budget longer.
Think about what the next few months typically bring for your household and start setting aside money now.
A seasonal expense isn't necessarily an emergency if you know it's coming.
4. Check In on Your Biggest Financial Goal
Remember the financial goal you set at the beginning of the year?
Neither do we.
That's exactly why September is a good time to revisit it.
There are still several months left in 2026, which means there's plenty of time to make progress.
Maybe your goal is to pay down a credit card, add to your emergency fund, save for a vehicle, prepare to buy a home or simply spend more intentionally.
Choose one priority and give it your attention for the rest of the year. A few months of consistent progress can make a bigger difference than trying to tackle everything at once.
5. Make Sure Your Emergency Fund Is Ready for the Unexpected
A dead car battery. An appliance that suddenly quits. A home repair you didn't see coming.
Unexpected expenses rarely wait for a convenient time.
If you have an emergency fund, take a look at where it stands. If summer expenses took a bite out of it, consider rebuilding it with automatic transfers from each paycheck.
If you don't have one yet, start small. Your first goal doesn't have to be thousands of dollars. Creating the habit of saving is an important first step.
Wherever the Season Takes You, Make a Plan
Fall might look a little different depending on where you live, but one thing stays the same: planning ahead can give you more control over your money.
Take a few minutes this September to check in on your spending, anticipate what's coming and choose one financial goal you'd like to make progress on before the end of the year.
